From Fear to Purpose: A Father’s Journey Forward by Amari Guy, JAG California Participant
Prepared Speaking Winner, JAG California Career Development Conference 2026
To begin, I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Amari Guy, and I’m 21 years old. When I was just 14, I dropped out of high school because I became a parent at 15, during my freshman year. I was a kid raising a kid.
For a long time, I lived without purpose, feeling lost and confused. That changed when I found Jesus Christ, who gave my life meaning and direction. About a year ago, I went back to school with one goal: to get my education so I could be a better teacher and role model for my son as he grows.
Raising a child at a young age forced me to grow up quickly. I had to take on responsibilities I wasn’t prepared for, and that brought its own challenges. But through these experiences, I’ve learned that I am blessed with opportunities—opportunities I once didn’t see in myself.
One of the biggest blessings has been participating in JAG. Being in this class has been a privilege. It’s not just about learning skills, it’s about shaping the person I am becoming. JAG has given me golden nuggets of wisdom, allowed me to make great friends, and create lasting memories.
If I had to thank JAG for one thing, it would be this: JAG removed the fear that once held me back—fear that could have stopped me from landing a good job. Now, I can confidently say: I am the guy for the job. I can walk into an interview with confidence, handle challenges at work professionally, and continue moving forward no matter what comes my way.
JAG has also anchored my public speaking skills. I’ve learned to communicate clearly, to lead, and to inspire others. The lessons I’ve gained won’t just benefit my career, they’ll benefit my family, too. I can show my son and others that there’s a better way, that a good job and a bright future are within reach.
My future doesn’t have to look miserable, and success doesn’t have to feel impossible. Thanks to JAG, I now have the confidence to show the world that I am ready and capable, and I know how to keep climbing the career ladder.
In closing, I want to leave you with something I’ve learned from this journey: Love is truth, and truth is love. You can do anything you set your mind to. For me, my son is my reason for pushing forward, for going back to school, and for becoming the man I’m meant to be.
Thank you for taking the time to listen, and thank you, JAG, for showing me that fear is temporary, but confidence and purpose last a lifetime.
